Associate Head of School - Social Work and Community and Youth Work

I have worked in health, social care and education for 18 years. Prior to becoming a social worker, I worked in a range of health and social care settings including inpatient and community mental health settings, and early intervention services. Working with young people who had disengaged from education sparked my interest in social work and led me to study to become a qualified social worker.

Before moving into higher education, I worked as a child and family social worker for several years before working at another educational institution in the North East for 5 years where I completed my teaching qualification and taught across a range of health, social care and childcare degree programmes. I joined the University of Sunderland in 2020 as Programme Leader of the BA (Hons) Social Work. In 2023 I became Associate Head of School in the School of Social Sciences.

Teaching and supervision

I am module leader for:

  • BA Social Work Level 6: Research Methods for Social Work, Dissertation
  • Dissertation Supervisor on BA (Hons) Social Work

  • I teach across all of our social work programmes including BA (Hons) Social Work, MA Social Work, BA (Hons) Social Work [Integrated Degree Apprenticeship], PGDip Social Work [Integrated Degree Apprenticeship].

Research interests for potential research students

I am especially interested in any research related to child protection. My own personal interests are around the assessment of risk, work with families, pre-birth assessments, the perception of child protection social workers. I have an interest in research relating to the emotional nature of social work and practise in other settings, and also enjoy researching social work education.
