Associate Professor in Environmental Psychology

I am an Environmental Psychologist researching how built and natural environments impact psychological behaviour, health, and wellbeing. I am a chartered member of the British Psychological Society and Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

Teaching and supervision

My teaching focuses on specialist modules in Environmental Psychology (Level 6) and professional skills and post-graduate advanced quantitative research methods. I also regularly supervise PhD students, as well as undergraduate and master's research projects. I also contribute to undergraduate modules on topics linked to health, wellbeing, and place; and I am module leader for a Stage 3 literature review module.

Research interests for potential research students

I welcome applications from postgraduate research students in all areas of environmental psychology. My specific interests are in the influence of built and natural environments on our health, wellbeing, and the development of our identity. Recent projects include the exploration of the potential of a range of “positive” places as health-promotion resources and the influence of place identity and individual differences such as trait cheerfulness on the perception of natural or urban environments used to improve cognition, subjective wellbeing, and physical health.

Research

As an environmental psychologist, my research interests are primarily focused on the impact of built and natural environments on behaviour, wellbeing, and physical health. This work includes the investigation of how the visual characteristics of environments and an individual's place-related identity and trait dispositions like cheerfulness impact our perception of different settings and, consequently, the outcomes associated with exposure to those settings.  In terms of outcomes, my work explores the differential impact of built and natural environments on cognition, fatigue, emotion, mood, and physical health indicators.
