Undergraduate Programme Lead, Deputy Head of School of Medicine
Originally from Gateshead, I have lived and worked in the north-east all my life. I graduated with MBBS with Distinction from Newcastle University in 2003 and worked as a junior doctor in various local hospitals before training as a Respiratory Physician throughout the north-east. I started as a consultant at South Tyneside Hospital (now part of South Tyneside and Sunderland Foundation Trust), where I developed special interests in complex pleural disease and COPD and palliation of non-malignant lung disease. I established complex pleural disease service, chaired the COPD guidelines group and was the clinical lead for medicine and care of the elderly 2016-2019.
I am particularly interested in how to implement guidance to achieve maximum clinical behaviour change. I developed an interest in medical education as the trainee representative to the North East School of Medicine. I redeveloped training programs in Respiratory and General Internal Medicine. Following my appointment as a Consultant Physician, I became Foundation Programme Director of South Tyneside Foundation Trust (2012-2018), leading a team to deliver one of the best-performing foundation programmes in the country.
I have educational interests in placement design and quality assessment, and the application of AI to undergraduate education. I have been involved in the University of Sunderland Medical degree since April 2019. I have been Director of Undergraduate Clinical Studies for STSFT, Year 3 Lead, Year 4 Lead, and Chair of Health and Conduct.
Since January 2023 I have held the role of Undergraduate Programme Lead where I am accountable for the quality and delivery of teaching across all phases of the course. I look forward to graduating our first cohort in 2024.
Outside of work, I enjoy running, my dog (a golden retriever), dark beers and making things with wood.
