Deputy Undergraduate Programme Lead, School of Medicine

I am the Deputy Programme Leader for MBChB Medicine supporting the Programme Leader and Head of School with specific responsibilities in Phase 2. I have taught undergraduate medical programmes for over 20 years before moving to the University of Sunderland in 2022.

I am a Senior Fellow of Advance HE (SFHEA).

My clinical role is at South Tyneside and Sunderland NHSFT one of our partner trusts where I work as a consultant in intensive care medicine. I qualified in medicine in 1991 and have been a consultant since 2004, having trained in medicine, anaesthesia and intensive care in Edinburgh, the midlands, New Zealand and the north-east.



Teaching and supervision

Research

I work in the most research active intensive care unit north of London, participating in large and small trials in critical care medicine.

Teaching:

I have taught medicine/anaesthesia and critical care in undergraduate and postgraduate courses for over 20 years. I have a particular interest in clinical preparedness and the transition between student and professional/employee.

Assessment:

I have examined at postgraduate and undergraduate level, developing the Sim programme for the inaugural and subsequent 20 diets of the FFICM exam. I am a standard setter for the Medical Schools Assessment Alliance.

Professional Standards:

I am an NCAS trained Clinical Investigator and led the appraisal/revalidation processes for my trust over a five-year period as Associate Medical Director.

Leadership:

I have led the delivery of individual courses and more broadly LEP delivery of undergraduate courses in trust. I have been lead regional advisor for the Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine and a co-opted member of the Faculty Board.
