Professor of Health Professions Pedagogy and Scholarship

As one of the University's Professors of Learning and Teaching, I am based in the Faculty of Health Sciences and Wellbeing. I am Programme Leader for the Professional Doctorate here at Sunderland and I work predominantly with doctoral candidates undertaking DBA, EdD, DProf, traditional PhDs and those applying for the claim of doctoral title via Existing Published Works. This is a cross-faculty programme leadership and I have worked with both colleagues and candidates from an array of academic disciplines and backgrounds for the last 15 years.

I qualified in Podiatric Medicine in 1992 and became a Founding Fellow of the Faculty of Podiatric Medicine (Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons, Glasgow) in 2012 alongside the award of Fellowship in Podiatric Medicine of the Royal College of Podiatry (London) in 2010.

Within the context of academic scholarship, I have published widely on doctoral pedagogy, advanced research design and methodology and my specialist areas of expertise within this field are doctoral research design and methodology and the establishment of researcher positionality. I actively contribute to the health services research strategic themes within the Helen McArdle Nursing and Research Care Institute.

Since joining the University in 2006, I have been awarded several national fellowships and external positions in recognition of my contribution to Higher Education including a National Teaching Fellowship and Principal Fellowship of Advance HE in 2017. I was awarded a Tenth Anniversary Visiting Professorship of Higher Education at the University of Cumbria and Visiting Professor of Higher Education at Liverpool Hope University in 2017. I have also gained Fellowships of both the Chartered Management Institute following the award of Chartered Manager Status, the Institute of Leadership and Management and Fellowship of the Society for Education and Training.

Within my professional discipline of podiatric medicine, as one of the first UK podiatrists to gain Chartered Scientist status, I now also serve as an assessor for the National Science Council. I work as a national mentor for Pharmacy Research UK, The Royal College of Podiatry and I held an Executive Board Member of both the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons and the International Federation of National Teaching Fellows for three years.

Teaching and supervision

I am Programme Leader for  the University's suite of Interdisciplinary Professional Doctorate Programmes and I teach Research Design and Methodology alongside Framing Professional Identity to cohorts of students from London Campus, University of the Commonwealth Caribbean, Jamaica and Sunderland Campus.

My specific pedagogical interests lies in learning and teaching enhancement via processes of transformative learning. Having taught the philosophical underpinnings of research design and methodology for the last sixteen years across several university programmes, I continue to adopt transformative learning approaches in my own professional practice as an academic.

Alongside supervising doctoral candidates, I regularly act as an Independent Chair in formal Viva voce examinations and as both Internal and External Examiner within and external to the University of Sunderland.

I also work, in conjunction with colleagues from CELT (Centre for Enhancement of Learning and Teaching) to supporting and facilitate colleagues who are undertaking their NTF, CATE and HE Advance (Formerly HEA), Senior Fellowship (D3) and Principal Fellowship (D4) applications.

Research interests for potential research students

I am currently working at maximum capacity in relation to the supervision of doctoral candidates in the fields of health professions pedagogy, health and social science research methodologies. Please do contact the University via the Graduate Research School, regarding potential future areas of research, so that  your proposed work can be considered by my academic colleagues within the Faculty of Health Sciences and Wellbeing and other faculties, where appropriate.

Research

I have completed a series of publishing projects and curriculum development with the MoD's tripartite 'Defence Medical Academy' with senior colleagues from the military.

At the University of Sunderland, I undertake research, evaluation and supervise doctoral students from a range of academic disciplines.

For several years, I worked with the regional charity, Mental Health North East in raising awareness of the stigma that accompanies mental illness, leaving many socially isolated and compounding factors of direct relevance to mental health and wellbeing. This included work with women's mental health and wellbeing, the mental health of military veterans and issues of accessibility to physical healthcare resources for people living with mental illness.
