Senior Lecturer in Project Management
I run an occasional blog for project management students.
As well as teaching project management, I am also interested in research in this area. The main focus of my research is the management of the design of complex projects, the modelling of through life costs and environmental costs of projects, incorporation of sustainability within project design and business management and finally the use of web based and other technologies in the management of projects. My research is backed up by over 25 years industrial experience prior to my move to academia.
Before entering academia I worked in various engineering and management roles in several companies which allowed me to gained extensive experience in successfully managing projects. Over the years I ran and managed numerous projects mainly in the UK, Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay and the USA, generally in the oil industry, electronic engineering and general engineering sectors.

Research
I started my research career at the University of Newcastle EPSRC Engineering Design Centre (EDC) in 1996 where I was a Senior Research Associate. While there I worked on three major projects: design management of complex system, modelling complex system and developing realistic whole life modelling and costing methods. All three projects involved working closely with major UK plcs including BA Systems, BNFL (as they were then), Rolls Royce (power group), Vosper Thorneycroft, AMEC and Kaverner.
In recent years my research has focused on sustainability and environmental issues within organisation and product life cycles, particularly with reference to the maritime industry and project concept design management. I am also very interested in how current technology affects how projects are managed.
A lot of my research interest in project management has been channelled via MSc students I have supervised. One of whom got through to the final three of the Association of Project Management Awards for best MSc dissertation in 2014. The title of his dissertation was “Agile Project Management Framework for e-Business Project in Unity Bank PLC”. In 2015 another student I supervised got through to the final of the APM awards for best MSc dissertation. This dissertation investigated ways of improving the running of a change management project within an organisation funded by the UK government.
