Senior Lecturer in Leadership

With significant experience as a lecturer and senior lecturer in further and higher education, I have taught a wide range of subjects and levels. In my present role, I deliver learning in business consultancy, leadership, strategy and organisational change on undergraduate and postgraduate courses. My role includes managing part-time degree courses enabling those who are in employment to gain qualifications to enhance opportunities for career progression.

Previous experience includes lecturer and senior manager roles in further education including developing and delivering the Headstart programme recognised nationally for its impact on widening participation in areas with low higher education engagement.  In a local north-east authority, I devised a talent management programme short-listed for CIPD and LGA awards. With Teesside University I re-wrote and validated a leadership programme specific to the needs of local government leading to transformation change in service delivery and recognised for employer collaboration with Teesside University.

As an SME business consultant, I have provided specialist advice across diverse sectors as part of a north-east Local Authority project and through my own consultancy business. Areas of advice include strategic growth, people management, and development and using management accountancy techniques to better understand organisational performance leading to sustainable business growth.

I am currently a Director of a Community Interest Company specialising in enhancing quality of life experience for domiciliary care clients.

Research interests for potential research students

I am currently focusing my research on how leadership and management skills and behaviours are developed through vocational undergraduate degree-level learning programmes.

Research

The practice of management and leadership, how senior managers are chosen, and how this leads to effective or ineffective organisational governance.

The impact of degree level apprenticeships on personal, social and organisational economies.

The personal knowledge, skills, and behaviours necessary for effective political leadership.

I have produced policy papers reviewing widening participation and financial literacy for 14+ year-olds learning within the state education sector used by the Gordon Brown government to introduce mandated learning in financial literacy to the state education sector.

My current research is focused on the impact of degree apprenticeships on the personal, organisational, and social economies, and formulating a paper evaluating management and leadership skills and behaviours required for 21st Century organisational success.
