Associate Head of School (Strategy and Operations)

I am Associate Head of School (Strategy and Operations) in the Faculty of Business, Law and Tourism. My team of highly capable academics is responsible for a suite of business courses, including BA (Hons) Business and Management and Master of Business Administration (MBA). Our courses are delivered on campuses in Sunderland, London, and Hong Kong, as well as jointly through partners around the world and online.

As a Strategy as Practice scholar, I am interested in strategising and leadership in organisations. My research specialism is participation in strategy formulation and implementation, including how strategies can be implemented across organisations and agencies. I also have a keen interest in event management, including looking at implementing emergency planning, resilience, and response.

With over a decade of experience in higher education, I have led modules including Strategic Management, Event Planning and Operations, Events and Society, Strategic Practice in Luxury Hospitality Management, Business Leadership and Professional Development, and Managing the Events Venue.

I am an External Examiner at the University of Hertfordshire, a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, and a member of the British Academy of Management and Chartered Management Institute.

In addition to doctoral research students, we are also looking to expand our knowledge exchange through KTPs and research partnerships with organisations.

Research

My current research is in the Strategy as Practice field and explores strategy implementation across multiple organisations. This includes exploring the barriers to effective strategy implementation. 

Previously, I have researched participation in strategy formulation and strategising and have published work exploring liminal spaces in relation to event design. I have used a case study methodology, as well as experience with a range of qualitative data, including observational data, document analysis, interviews, and ethnography. I also have conducted quantitative studies and can analyse data using SPSS.
