Richard Barker

Richard Barker has 40 years experience as a healthcare leader in the NHS. He began his extensive career as an information officer for Sunderland Health Authority, before moving to more senior roles at Board and Executive level. He's held various positions, including Executive Director of Operations and Performance for North East Strategic Health Authority, Chief Operating Officer for NHS South of Tyne and Wear, and Executive Director within Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals.

Richard’s most recent position was as the Regional Director (North) for NHS England.

In 2022, Richard was awarded CBE for services to healthcare in the North of England in the Queen’s final birthday honours list.

Richard joined the Board of Governors in December 2024.
